Labor Day Weekend in Orange County: The Ultimate Local Guide

From the Orange International Street Fair to world-class beaches, here's everything to do in Orange County over Labor Day weekend 2026 — September 5-7.

Labor Day Weekend in Orange County: The Ultimate Local Guide

Make the Most of Labor Day Weekend in Orange County

Labor Day weekend is one of my favorite times to be in Orange County. The summer crowds are starting to thin, the water is at its warmest, and the local event calendar is packed. Whether you're a longtime OC resident looking for something new or visiting for the long weekend, there's no shortage of ways to celebrate — and as someone who lives and works here, I can tell you the lineup for 2026 does not disappoint.

This year, Labor Day falls on Monday, September 7, 2026, giving you a full three-day weekend (Saturday through Monday) to explore everything Orange County has to offer. Here's my guide to making the most of it.

The Anchor Event: Orange International Street Fair

If you do one thing this Labor Day weekend, make it the Orange International Street Fair in Old Towne Orange. Now in its 53rd year, this beloved community institution draws thousands of visitors to the historic Orange Circle for a free three-day celebration running Friday, September 4 through Sunday, September 6 (Friday 5PM–10PM, Saturday and Sunday 10AM–10PM).

What makes this event special is the sheer variety. Each street radiating out from the Orange Circle represents a different international culture — you can grab French crepes, German pretzels and beer, Mexican street food, Greek gyros, Japanese yakitori, Italian gelato, and much more, all within a few blocks. There are eight live entertainment stages running all weekend, from original bands to cover acts to traditional ethnic music performances.

Tips for the Street Fair

  • Go Friday evening first: Smaller crowds, same great atmosphere — perfect for scoping out your favorite food streets before the weekend rush
  • Take Metrolink: The Metrolink station is just two blocks from the Orange Circle, avoiding the parking headache entirely
  • Arrive early on Saturday: By noon on Saturday the crowds are dense; I recommend getting there at opening around 10AM
  • It's free: No admission charge, though bring cash for food, drinks, and craft vendors

Hit the Beaches

Late summer means the Pacific is at its warmest — typically in the low-to-mid 70s Fahrenheit by early September. This is genuinely the best water temperature of the entire year in Southern California, and I always tell people who are on the fence about swimming: Labor Day weekend is the time to do it.

Huntington Beach (Surf City USA)

Huntington Beach is the quintessential OC Labor Day destination. The Main Street area comes alive with beach volleyball, fire pits, and the iconic pier. The US Open of Surfing may have wrapped up in late July, but the surf culture energy lingers all summer long. Pack early — PCH parking fills by 9AM on holiday weekends. The Bolsa Chica State Beach just north of the pier offers more parking and a quieter stretch of sand.

Newport Beach and the Balboa Peninsula

For a more classic SoCal beach scene, Newport Beach delivers. The Balboa Fun Zone has rides and an arcade that kids love, and the Balboa Ferry — a tiny three-car ferry that's been running since 1919 — is a must-do for visitors. Rent a duffy boat for a sunset cruise through the Newport Bay; several rental outfits operate near the Fun Zone and it's one of those experiences that never gets old.

Laguna Beach

If you're looking for something more scenic and quieter than the larger beach cities, Laguna Beach is worth the drive down PCH. Main Beach is the postcard shot, but locals gravitate toward Victoria Beach (where you can find the historic Pirate Tower at low tide) and Treasure Island Beach. The village itself has dozens of excellent galleries, restaurants, and boutiques — perfect for a Sunday morning stroll.

Dana Point and Doheny State Beach

Dana Point offers a more relaxed pace. Doheny State Beach has some of the best camping in the county if you managed to snag a reservation months ago, and the harbor is gorgeous for an evening walk. The Lantern District has become a genuinely great dining destination in its own right over the past few years.

Family-Friendly Fun

Water Parks

If you have kids, Labor Day weekend is one of the last chances to hit the water parks before they close for the season. Knott's Soak City in Buena Park and Wild Rivers in Irvine are both open through Labor Day. Wild Rivers in particular has been a local favorite since reopening — the lazy river and wave pool are perennial hits. Buy tickets online in advance; gate prices are higher and lines move slowly on holiday weekends.

OC Parks

Orange County's regional park system is underrated. O'Neill Regional Park in the foothills near Trabuco Canyon has shaded picnic areas, equestrian trails, and creek crossings that feel worlds away from the coast. Craig Regional Park in Fullerton and Yorba Regional Park are both great for family BBQs with playground equipment. The county parks do fill up, so arrive early if you're planning a picnic setup.

Great Wolf Lodge

For families with younger kids, Great Wolf Lodge in Anaheim is an indoor waterpark hotel option if you want to avoid the heat and crowds altogether. It's pricey but an easy yes for families with children under 10.

Outdoor Activities and Hidden Gems

Santa Ana River Trail

The Santa Ana River Trail stretches nearly 30 miles from the Huntington Beach coastline all the way to Anaheim Hills. Labor Day weekend is an ideal time to rent bikes and ride a stretch of it — the coastal section through Huntington Beach toward Newport is especially scenic. Several bike rental shops operate near the Huntington Beach pier.

Irvine Great Park

The Great Park in Irvine hosts free weekend events throughout the summer, and Labor Day weekend typically includes live music, food vendors, and the iconic Great Park Balloon tethered ride (when weather permits). It's a genuinely nice way to spend a few hours with family without spending much money.

San Juan Capistrano

For something completely different, the Mission San Juan Capistrano and the surrounding historic Los Rios District are worth a half-day trip. The architecture, the swallows, and the old adobe structures make it feel like a different era entirely — and it's a great counterpoint to a weekend heavy on sun and sand.

Where to Eat and Drink

I could write a separate post on this alone, but a few highlights: Eat Chifa in Costa Mesa continues to be one of the most interesting restaurants in the county for Peruvian-Chinese fusion. Bear Flag Fish Company in Newport Beach is the move for fresh fish and shrimp tacos near the water. In Dana Point, Fisherman's Restaurant on the harbor is an institution. And if you find yourself in Old Towne Orange for the Street Fair, Craft by Smoke and Fire just off the circle is excellent for a sit-down meal before or after.

A Note on Real Estate During the Holiday Weekend

I always notice something interesting around Labor Day: families who've been "thinking about moving" all summer suddenly get serious. The kids are back in school in a week or two, the new year feels close, and buyers who want to be settled before the holidays start acting. In the current OC market (active inventory around 5,100+ homes as of early August 2026, up significantly year-over-year), there's more to choose from than we've seen in years. If a move has been on your mind, this fall could be genuinely favorable timing.

Whether you're buying, selling, or just enjoying the long weekend with family, I hope you have a great Labor Day in Orange County. This place really does shine in September.
