Why Santa Ana Deserves a Spot on Your Weekend List
When clients ask me where to find the real cultural heart of Orange County, I point them to Santa Ana. It is the county seat, one of the oldest cities in the region, and home to a downtown that feels nothing like the master-planned suburbs most people picture when they think of OC. You get historic architecture, a serious art scene, family-friendly museums, and some of the best food in Southern California, all within a few square miles.
I help buyers and sellers across Orange County, and Santa Ana consistently surprises people who have only driven past it on the 5 or the 55. Whether you are planning a Saturday out or thinking about calling the city home, here is my local guide to the best things to do in Santa Ana, CA.
Explore Downtown Santa Ana (DTSA)
4th Street Market and the DTSA Food Scene
Start at 4th Street Market, one of Santa Ana's food halls and an incubator for up-and-coming chefs. It is an easy place to graze with a group, since everyone can pick a different stall. From there, walk along 4th Street (Calle Cuatro), the historic commercial corridor that has served the city's Latino community for generations. You will find panaderias, taquerias, bridal shops, and newer cafes and cocktail bars side by side.
- Best for: Casual lunches, date nights, and showing out-of-town guests a different side of OC
- Tip: Weekend evenings get busy; arrive before 6 pm if you want easy parking in the downtown structures
First Saturday ArtWalk
If you only do one thing in Santa Ana, make it the DTSA First Saturday ArtWalk. It is free, all-ages, and runs from roughly 5 pm to 10 pm on the first Saturday of most months throughout the Artists Village, centered around 2nd Street and Broadway. Expect open galleries and studios, live music, dancing, and dozens of local artisan vendors spread across the Artists Village, Sycamore Street, and Plaza Calle Cuatro. Check the organizers' social channels before you go, since dates occasionally shift around holidays.
The Frida Cinema and Historic Architecture
The Frida Cinema, a nonprofit independent theater downtown, screens cult classics, foreign films, and indie releases, and it is a great way to cap off an ArtWalk night. While you are downtown, take a few minutes to look up: Santa Ana has one of the largest concentrations of historic commercial buildings in Orange County, and the Old Orange County Courthouse, a red sandstone landmark from 1901, is a short walk away.
Museums and Family Attractions
Bowers Museum
The Bowers Museum has been a Santa Ana institution since 1936 and is one of the best museums in Southern California for world art and culture. Current permanent and ongoing exhibits include Ancient Arts of China, Art of the Pacific Islands, Ceramics of Western Mexico, and several galleries dedicated to California history and art.
- Hours: Tuesday through Sunday, 10 am to 4 pm (closed Mondays and major holidays), as listed on the museum's website in September 2026
- Admission: $18 adults, $15 seniors and students; children under 12 free with a paying adult
- Local perk: Santa Ana residents get free general admission every Sunday with proof of residency
- Family Festivals: Free festivals in the courtyard on the first Sunday of each month
- Parking: $7 in the lot just north of the museum at 20th and Main
Discovery Cube Orange County
Just up Main Street, Discovery Cube is the kind of place that tires kids out in the best way. It has more than 100 hands-on science exhibits and is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm. You cannot miss the giant tilted cube from the 5 freeway. It is a great rainy-day option (yes, we do get a few).
Santa Ana Zoo at Prentice Park
The Santa Ana Zoo is small, walkable, and perfect for younger kids. It is open daily from 10 am to 4 pm, with general admission around $14 as of 2026. The zoo is known for its primate collection, and it also has a botanical garden, rides including a Ferris wheel, storytime programs, and the Bean Sprouts Cafe. Santa Ana residents get free admission on the third Sunday of each month.
Seasonal Events Worth Planning Around
Noche de Altares (Dia de los Muertos)
Santa Ana hosts Orange County's largest Dia de los Muertos celebration, Noche de Altares, organized by El Centro Cultural de Mexico since 2002. Downtown streets fill with community altars (ofrendas), Aztec and folklorico dance, live music, artisan vendors, and food. Organizers list the 2026 event for Saturday, November 7, running from midday into the evening; confirm the schedule on the official event pages before you go. For more fall ideas across the county, see my Dia de los Muertos events guide.
Holiday Season Downtown
As the holidays approach, DTSA's restaurants, bars, and shops lean into the season, and the December ArtWalk is typically one of the busiest of the year. It is an easy, low-key alternative to the crowds at the bigger theme-park holiday events.
Outdoor Spaces and Free Things to Do
- Santa Ana River Trail: A paved multi-use path that follows the river through the city and continues all the way to Huntington Beach. Great for biking and running.
- Santiago Park: A long, shady park along Santiago Creek near the Bowers and the zoo, with trails, a lawn bowling green, and picnic areas.
- Historic neighborhood walks: Stroll the tree-lined streets of Floral Park, French Park, and Washington Square to see Craftsman, Spanish Revival, and Tudor homes from the 1920s and 1930s. Floral Park's annual home and garden tour, when held, is a local favorite.
- Resident Sundays: Between free Sundays at the Bowers and the zoo, Santa Ana residents get some of the best cultural perks in the county.
What It Is Like to Live in Santa Ana
Many visitors leave Santa Ana wondering whether they could live here, and that is a fair question. The city offers a range of housing that is hard to find elsewhere in central Orange County, from condos and townhomes to historic single-family homes and larger estates in areas like Park Santiago and the neighborhoods near North Tustin.
Current Market Snapshot
According to Redfin, the median sale price in Santa Ana was about $880,000 for the three months ending June 2026, up roughly 7.6% year over year. Homes sold in a median of about 44 days, with a sale-to-list ratio near 99.8%, and about 38% of homes sold above list price. Different data sources report different medians depending on methodology and home mix, so treat these as approximate. Prices vary widely by neighborhood: recent sales in August 2026 ranged from condos in the high $500,000s to historic homes in the North Santa Ana area above $1.3 million.
Why Buyers Choose Santa Ana
- Central location: Quick access to the 5, 55, 22, and 57 freeways, the Santa Ana Regional Transportation Center (Metrolink and Amtrak), and John Wayne Airport
- Relative value: Santa Ana often offers a lower entry point than Irvine, Tustin, or Costa Mesa, while sitting right next to them
- Character: Historic districts, walkable downtown, and a strong sense of community
- Culture: Museums, the arts district, and year-round festivals right in your backyard

Plan Your Santa Ana Day (or Your Move)
Here is how I would spend a perfect Saturday in Santa Ana: morning at the Bowers Museum, lunch at 4th Street Market, an afternoon stroll through Floral Park or French Park, and the First Saturday ArtWalk after dark. If you have kids, swap in the Discovery Cube or the zoo. Either way, you will see a side of Orange County that most people miss.
If you are thinking about buying or selling in Santa Ana, or anywhere in Orange County, I would love to help you find the neighborhood that fits your life.
